Adult Education Study Apocryph-huh? An Introduction to Those Strange Books We Never Read Pastor’s Office; Noon; Sunday
Course Description: The last book in all Protestant Bibles is the book of the prophet Malachi, after which we hear from Matthew’s Gospel. But every once in a while, we’ll hear tell of peculiar books with names like Ecclesiasticus or Bel and the Dragon. That’s because in between the prophetic era and the Gospels, the people of Israel weren’t taking a break from writing things down. Catholics, Greek Orthodox Christians and Slavic Orthodox Christians retain some of those writings in their Bibles, and call them the Apocrypha. They’re not technically Scripture for Christians, but they do tell us many things about what was happening in Israel historically and theologically in between where the Old Testament leaves off and the New Testament begins.
Over the next several months, our adult education class will explore these texts. A good study bible should include them as background information, but if you don’t have a copy, we’ll be able to provide handouts. Join us!
Requirements: Bring an open mind. Materials for the next week will be provided in class for those who need it. For those of you who are online, versions of most texts can be accessed at: www.biblenet.net/library/apocrypha/index.html or etext.lib.virginia.edu/kjv.browse.html
